Welsh indie label Ear to Ear Records have, along with Indonesian label Gerpfast Kolektif, released a pretty damn awesome compilation of shoegaze from around the world called Revolution – The Shoegaze Revival – A Compilation. Available as a ‘name your price’ offer on Bandcamp, the set comprises 30 bands from 16 countries, covering 5 of the 6 inhabited continents. I don’t know what you think, but I reckon that’s fucking awesome.
After the reformation of a host of ‘first wave’ shoegaze bands in 2014, such as Ride, Slowdive, Swervedriver, and Medicine, the big wigs at the label felt that 2015 would be a big year for shoegaze, and felt the only way to ring in the new year was to celebrate the bands who “are writing the next chapter in shoegaze”.
Joe Foster, co-founder of Creation Records (My Bloody Valentine, Medicine, Swervedriver), supports the project wholeheartedly, “This is a new comp with the best of the world shoegaze/magical psychpoppy’s REBIRTH…. Ear To Ear Records are a new Welsh/Canadian label in the spirit of Creation and 4AD and just as obsessed as that! Why do I refer to rebirth instead of revival? In contrast, a *rebirth* in the same period gave us such bands as The Cramps, Primal Scream and Cocteau Twins – what a range!! And such a huge and wide world of music…this is exactly what is happening again in a new and unexpected way! 30 bands from 16 countries worldwide…an unprecedented spread of hope and art”.
Streaming above is my favourite cut from the compilation, ‘Lime’ by Hong Kong quartet Thud. Download the rest of the compilation from Bandcamp.
