For those of you who don’t know, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is a movement that has swept through the internet in aid of the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS ) Association. ALS, better known as Motor Neurone Disease, is a disease that attacks the spinal cord and can cause speech difficulties, muscle spasms, paralysis, and death. It is the disease that afflicts Stephen Hawking.

Around 5,600 people are diagnosed with ALS each year and currently 30,000 people in the United States and 5,000 people in the UK suffer from the disease.

What is special about the ALS Ice Bucket challenge is that once the person who has been challenged has been given a thorough soaking, they nominate someone else to take the challenge. The nominated person can either accept the challenge and donate $10 to the ALS Association or turn the offer down and donate more money, around $100, to the ALS Association.

The Ice Bucket challenge has raised nearly $3 million dollars for the ALS Association which is a reported 50% increase on last year.
