Indietracks 2017 Interview Series #15 – Schande: “My Mom Says We’re Cool”

Indietracks runs from 28-30 JULY 2017 at Midland Railway, Butterley, Derbyshire, UK.

I auditioned to join Schande recently because my dream is to play in a band who’re playing at Indietracks. I sailed through the musical part of the audition. I’m a strong all rounder you see, bass, guitar, drums, clarinet and dancing. It’s when they asked me my name that my dreams were shattered, “uuhmm…eh…it’s Mar” I mumbled unconvincingly, “Yeah, M. A. R. That’s it”. I wish I’d thought about it beforehand but I’d been too busy practicing my scales. I could’ve been Tom, Jim, Bob, Ted, Ned, Sam, Tam but I hadn’t thought it through. Schande only allow people with 3 letters in their name to join the band and admittedly Mar is a shit name. I don’t blame them for ditching me. That said, if you’ve also auditioned and your name is Jim or Tom then you never got in cos you suck at music. Deal with it. Here are the three letter wonders themselves to tell you how good a time they’ll be having at Indietracks:

Overblown: What have you heard about the festival and are you excited to be visiting for the first time?

Gio: I think I’m the only one in the band who has never been/played at Indietracks before and yeah, I’m super excited! Great line up, can’t wait to be at the Midland Railway Centre for the fest!

Jen: I’ve played solo & Jez has played with both Flemmings and Ace Bushy Striptease, but this is the first time Schande as a full band will be playing and I can’t wait. The line up is so amazing and I really want to get on that steam train again!

O: At Overblown we love a cover version. If you had to play a cover of another artist from this year’s bill which band and song would it be? (And will you consider actually doing it?)

Jez: Suggested Friends ‘I Called Her Out In The Worst Way’. They’re the absolute best and that song is beautiful.

Gio: I’d go with ‘Embody’ by Frankie Cosmos. Greta Kline puts a lot of personal things in her songs so it wouldn’t be easy to cover it- but it’s great how a song can be so meaningful in the most simple way possible. I’ve been loving it since the first time I heard the lo-fi version on their Bandcamp.

Jen: Ohhhh those are all great shouts. ‘I Called Her Out…’ reminds me of Songbird by Fleetwood Mac so I have to try not to cry while listening to Faith singing. I’m cheating and picking two, because I’m like that. Frankie Cosmos is part of my choices as well, with ‘On the Lips’ (which I like to think was written with me in mind even though that is impossible). I’d love to cover “When I Was Your Age” by Mammoth Penguins as well.

O: Similarly, if you were to choose a song of your own to be covered by another band on the bill which song and band would it be?

Gio: A ‘Broken Gavel’ cover version by Suggested Friends, maybe? It’d be great!

Jen: That would rule…then we could hear what the song sounds like sung well and in key! I’d love to hear how ME REX would interpret one of our songs.

Jez: If Maybe Don’t could cover ‘What If It’s In Calligraphy?’ that’d be great, as I know Simon from the band loves extended bass outros.

O: There’s always a great indie disco to be had after the bands finish playing. What song would you request and are we likely to find you on the dancefloor?

Gio: I really don’t know – I clearly remember asking Sean Price to put Mclusky on at the last DIY Popfest here in London, for example… Safe to say I suck at this!

Jez: Always a bit of a sucker for all your Hefners and Bikini Kills, but I might pluck up the courage to ask for Lorde – ‘Green Light’, if we’re still okay to like her? I always miss if a pop star says something terrible. But the song is perfect.

Jen: My favourite music to dance to is old soul/R&B, but lately the Shura Remix of ‘Priestess’ by Pumarosa has given me a variety of feels. Honestly, just give me enough whiskey I’ll dance to anything, even though my dancing can be equated to a baby deer or giraffe trying to walk for the first time with that “oh, look at you… trying to do something you don’t know how to” feel, only definitely not as cute or endearing.

O: Bum Notes Karaoke with Ruby Waters is a great night and will be at Indietracks for the first time this year. What’s your go-to karaoke song and can we expect to see you singing it?

Gio: Trying not to sing on ‘El Scorcho’ by Weezer would be really challenging!

Jez: My jam ‘Seventy Times 7’ by Brand New. Pray they don’t play it.

Jen: I pray they play both of those songs. ‘More, More, More’ by the Andrea True Connection is my favourite go to. I’ll belt the shit out of that song if it’s an option!

With so many great bands playing tell our readers why they should choose to come and see your set.

Jez: We try really hard and have been practicing a lot.

Jen: Because my mom says we’re cool. And because I’ll tell on you to your mom if you don’t, and you’ll get buuuuuuussssssted.

Schande play Indietracks Festival on Saturday 29th July. We’ll see you all there.
