Shunkan was a 12th century monk who was involved in a plot to overthrow Taira no Kiyomori, the military leader of Japan at the time. After being nabbed and exiled on a remote island, Shunkan sunk into a deep depression and eventually committed suicide by refusing to eat food. The fuzz-pop of the New Zealand group that share the name of the doomed monk, could not be further from the origins of their moniker in terms of mood. ‘Our Names’ is a breathless blast of gloriously unhinged noisy pop, that bruises and batters its way through your earholes.
