Who: William Covert, Joseph Klomes, William Seals, Nick Spiese.

What: Post hardcore

Where: Illinois, USA.

Why: Exploring a brand of post hardcore sprinkled with the grandeur of post rock that sits somewhere between the furious fuzz of Perfect Pussy and the controlled fury of At The Drive-In, Chicago’s Droughts are a confrontational and unusual proposition. Creating songs that do not pander or condescend to the listener, they create music that is ferocious and propulsive, but yet is never trite or patronising.

Their long awaited debut LP, Stay Behind, is set to be released on February 24th. On it, they further explore their opaque and yet straightforward sound. Take ‘Welcome’, the album opener, as an example. It is a concise and precise amalgamation of blast beats, melody, and guitars that veer from searing to soaring. Vocals sit in that perfect place between melodic and malevolent, leading to a track that is both savage and cathartic.
