Alt-J Hunger of the Pine

After a debut album of surprises, Alt-J have returned with the first single from their upcoming album This Is All Yours. The Leeds experimental indie trio released the song yesterday via Zane Lowe’s Radio One show. It features a sample of Miley Cyrus’ song “4×4” from her album Bangerz. It is the first piece of music released from the follow up to their million selling and Mercury Prize winning debut, An Awesome Wave. The album will be released on September 22nd and will coincide with tour of the UK, Ireland and the U.S.

The song is a surprisingly low key return that finds singer Joe Newman murmuring over a tense and minimal backdrop of synth-led bleeps. Oddly, the sampled vocal of Miley Cyrus intoning, “I’m a female rebel” melds seamlessly into the slowly unfurling effort. In an interview with DIY Mag keyboard player Gus Unger-Hamilton said the idea for the sample arose when drummer Thom Green was enlisted to remix one of singer’s tracks. “He (Thom Green) was doing a Miley Cyrus remix. That was a sample that he was using in there quite a lot, and it sounded cool with what Joe was playing on the guitar.”
