Disruption Or Drawn And Quartered
Being torn apart by four horses was a relatively popular method of execution in the Medieval and Early Modern Era. It involved chaining four horses to the victim’s arms and legs, smacking the horses on the rear end, and then watching the condemned person being pulled apart. It was also known as, rather euphemistically, ‘disruption’ or, quite literally, being ‘drawn and quartered’. Sounds like a delightful way to go.
Leeds quartet Pulled Apart By Horses are similarly aggressive and unforgiving. “Lizard Baby” is the latest release from their upcoming third album Blood which will be released on September 1st via Sony/Red. The song is both sleazy and grungy, like a more polished version of seminal proto-grunge Seattle band Green River. It’s meandering bass lines grabs the listener from the outset and, combined with the weird and disturbing video, takes them on a journey through some pretty rough territory.
For some reason it makes me imagine someone being dragged about by the hair through some kind of field. Perhaps I shouldn’t have publicised that.
The song is inspired by the birth of the royal baby last summer, which may give some indication as to how these northerners feel about the aristocracy. It was featured on Radio 1 as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record last night, which is ironic as the song is apparently a dig at people who put on a false act.
