Debut Album New Born Out May 16th Via Moon Sounds Records.
Sounds of Sputnik is a decidedly apt name for this shoegaze/dreampop quintet from Russia. Their weightless music is most certainly to be filed under extraterrestrial and one can easily imagine it providing the soundtrack for a documentary about deep space exploration. Today, Overblown is delighted to be premiering the video for the Fran Ashcroft, who has previously worked with Damon Albarn and Lords of Acid, remix of ‘Light Scheme’, Sounds of Sputnik’s collaboration with Ukrainian/Canadian space rock duo Ummagma. The single comes with a wonderful new video which you can view above. Produced and directed by Latvia/UK experimental filmmaker Dariy Karyakin, the video features actors Nadine Andreeva and Egon Skakun in a pensive and reflective mood.
The track is a perfect representation of the celestial and sensuous atmosphere effortlessly created on Sound of Sputnik’s debut LP New Born which features a plethora of collaborators in addition to Ummagma and Fran Ashcroft. The album also sees the likes of drummer Graham Bonnar (Swervedriver/ Brian Jonestown Massacre) on ‘Overdrive’, and remixes by Malcolm Holmes (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark), Russian producers Morozov and Oleg Mezherovsky, and Brazil’s Mind Movies.
“Working on the SOS remix was a real pleasure, and very straightforward – I just did what the song asked me to, no fixes or additions; everything was there, and in truth was already captured very well. I kind of ran with that and just changed the focus a little,” explains Fran Ashcroft. “When something comes along like this, that’s so well put together, the challenge is not to mess up what’s already right, and keep the integrity of the song intact.”
