Sufjan Stevens Shares ‘Should Have Known Better’

0

Following the release of the mournful and intimate ‘No Shade In The Shadow Of The Cross’, Sufjan Stevens has shared ‘Should Have Known Better’ from his upcoming album, Carrie & Lowell, due for release on March 31st via Asthmatic Kitty.

The songs on the album, his first since 2010’s The Age of Adz, were inspired by the death of his mother, Carrie, in 2012. His stepfather is also referenced in the album title. After venturing into sonic experimentation with The Age of Adz, the album marks a return to the elegiac folk of his earlier career as heard on 2004’s Seven Swans.

‘Should Have Known Better’ explores an incident from Stevens’ childhood in which his mother, Carrie, left him in a video shop (remember those?). He sings in a hushed, restrained voice perhaps mirroring the vulnerability of a child alone in a public place.
