Formed by Josef Prygodzicz and Faye Gibson, Winter Villains aren’t the kind of band to storm headlines. Their beautiful chamber pop is more the kind of music to gain popularity gently, quietly being brilliant until one day they’re massive. After a spell in the studio, the duo return with a new track and promise of an album in the very near future.
After a debut which offered something of an autumnal listen, the duo’s latest implies a tentatively cosier climate. ‘Empire’ is full of sonorous keys and gently fluttering guitars, positively twinkling with human warmth. The choral vocals remain, breathy and melodic like a happier Low, and the whole thing glides by dreamily. It’s a gorgeous statement of intent.
Wonderfully titled LP #2 ‘Once There Were Sparks, Now There Are Ashes’ is released May 11th, and the group have a few live shows coming up too.
