Minimal Punk Folk
It’s a good day. Building on the great impression they made at the Fortuna POP! curated Shake the Shacklewell II event in Dalston last month, London based trio The Wharves have announced the release date of their debut album At Bay (November 3rd) and released the first single from the record “Renew”.
Strolling along led by bare drums and a walking bassline, the song is a minimal punk folk amalgamation of melodious vocal harmonies, chunky guitar and a weird psychedelic break down. The song is dark and yet hopeful dealing with the desire to begin again: “Renew, Cold War fantasy, recalibrate and turn into something else”. It’s a gem.
Plus their singer/guitarist’s name is Dearbhla Minogue and hails from Galway (that’s in Ireland, dummy). As we all know, Irish people are better than everyone else at pretty much everything that one would care to be proficient at. Rounding out the trio is Gemma Fleet providing lilting vocals and bass and the thunderous Marion Andrau on drums.
