This is simple. We love these songs. You should listen and tell us what you think of them.
Let me also point out that this is not necessarily focused on new songs. Just what we’ve been listening to and loving this week.
1. Magana – ‘Oceans’
It’s no secret how much I love New York bedroom pop artist CHUCK. With this in mind, I approached the cover of his wonderful track ‘Oceans’ by alt / indie singer songwriter Magana with a bit of trepidation. I need not have worried. She takes his gentle song of longing and somehow imbues it with more sadness and more want. Simply beautiful.
2. ÄTSCH – ‘Dabu’
This one is the second release from Dublin based experimental / post-rock / jazz outfit ÄTSCH. Apparently ‘ÄTSCH’ means ‘yah’ in German. Who knew? Anyway, this one is a gentle and enchanting track that ebbs and flows through a simple and welcoming opening that quickly develops into a nuanced and intricate exploration of up lifting jazz hijinks.
3. Wharves – ‘Love Decide’
Here are Australian indie rock quartet Wharves (not to be confused with UK based trio The Wharves) with their latest track ‘Love Decide’. Combining a deft sense of melody with a driving performance and production, the track has that ‘gotta get the fuck outta here’ vibe. Here’s what they say: “’Love Decide’ is about accepting that some things are bigger and more powerful than you and that you aren’t always in control. It’s a reminder to myself that it’s ok to be on my own and if a relationship isn’t working, I can let go and I will be happier and free. I’m not lying to myself or the person I’m with by forcing something that’s not meant to be”.
4. Bucolic – ‘Daisy’
It’s lo-fi, fuzzy, reflective, and with bang of early 90’s alt rock. This means we love the latest track from Bucolic, the one man project of New Jersey native Seth Carpenter. It’s from his upcoming album Rope’s Wing, which I hope has many more gems like this one. I reckon if you like the bedroom pop of CHUCK, then this one is for you. For sure.
5. The/Wanderlust. – ‘This Adventure’
Here on Overblown we love an adventure. We’ve been all over the world, and seen a lot of stuff. We’re also fond, sometimes, of an internal adventure. ‘This Adventure’ by The/Wanderlust is ideal for both. At times driving and at times epic, the song is a venture into stripped back and minimal post rock that really shines our coconuts.
