Surrey alternative rock singer songwriter Annabel Allum is one I’ve missed somehow over the last while. Turns out that I have seriously been missing something special. Her cathartic, visceral alternative rock packs a melodic wallop that walks the tight rope between fuzzed up raw guitars and vocals glistening with pop melodies. Take latest single ‘Tricks’ for an example. On first listen it appears to be a straight up alt rock track, but on repeated listens unveils a burrowing melody that takes root surreptitiously. Guitars roar with an unbridled fuzz, but it is Annabel’s vocals that take centre stage, drawing the listener on a journey through the childhood exploration of the lyrics.
The video, which is streaming above, sees Annabel take a visit into her dark subconscious as she watches herself perform the track on screen in an empty cinema. It is as if she is looking at another side of herself that she finds extremely disturbing.
Her upcoming show in London on 15th September is sold out. Catch her live if you can.
