‘Hibernal’ is out on May 30th.
‘Hibernal’, the newest single from Glasgow experimental rock quartet Draws Creature Mask, is an unusual beast. It possesses an epic running time of over eleven minutes, and a string section, and yet is somehow extremely accessible. Melody trumps all.
Recorded with Lewis Glass of Glassworks Studios and noise rock quartet Bridal Shower, the track sees the group at their most ambitious and most expansive. Mournful strings sweep and sway in between the lilting vocals of Callum Elks, and the exploratory passages expanded by Fraser Walpole on guitar, Danny Elks on bass and Lee Haxton on drums.
It is refreshing to see a new band unafraid of experimentation and prog-like song length. It seems to be that while many bands aim to refine and become more concise, Draws Creature Mask are doing the exact opposite. Maybe that’s exactly what we need right now.
