Ex Hex - Don't Wanna Lose

Nail The Coffin Down

My grandmother is 97. My dad says that when she dies they’ll have to nail the coffin down. The same could be said of Mary Timony, who seems to be indestructible and unstoppable. For near thirty years, she has been at the forefront of the Washington, D.C., and for a while the Boston, music scene. She went to her first gig in 1984. Beefeater and Rites of Spring were playing and she was hooked, but it wasn’t until after university that she felt she could write songs and be in a band. Since then she has been a member of Autoclave, Helium and Wild Flag. She has released three solo albums, contributed to Deftones front-man Chino Moreno’s Team Sleep project and worked with members of Sleater-Kinney, The Minders and Quasi and also been referenced in a Death Cab For Cutie song.

Now she’s back with her latest project, Ex Hex. Named after her second solo record, she has enlisted the help of Laura Harris (The Aquarium, Benjey Ferree) and Betsy Wright to round out the power trio for the album. “Don’t Wanna Lose” is the album opener and it is two minutes and twenty six seconds of awesomely off kilter rock ‘n’ roll. It’s an effortless and fun tune with a chorus as addictive as methadone. You’ll be singing it in your sleep.

The band’s debut album is titled Rips and will be released on October 7th in the US and October 13th in the rest of the world via the legendary Merge Records.
