New EP Set For Release Before The End Of The Year.
Just over a year ago, Limerick/Galway/Glasgow alternative garage pop trio FONDA released their debut EP Social Services. Produced by So Cow’s Brian Kelly in Galway, the set revealed a lo-fi act with a knack for a delicate melody, perhaps a love for a certain C86 compilation, and certainly a lot of potential.
Much of that potential is realised on latest single ‘Dreaming’. The track takes their established blueprint of simplicity and a focus on melody and simply does everything with 100% more confidence than before. Especially noticeable is Fonda’s not so secret weapon in the form of singer Liam O’Conner’s voice. Sitting somewhere between Jarvis Cocker’s confidence and Matt Berninger’s croon, his is a voice that is weighed with a natural and earnest emotion. At certain parts of the track, his baritone is perfectly complemented by Laura Kelly’s lilt that feels akin to Juliana Hatfield’s vital contributions to the Lemonheads.
Expect a new 4 track EP in the coming months. FONDA will be headlining Good Name at Dublin’s Bernard Shaw August 11 with support from Shrug Life. Then you can catch them in Cork at Fred Zeppelin’s with post punk chums Slow Riot on August 12. They support Gun Outfit in Dolan’s Warehouse in Limerick on August 16. Which is pretty damn cool.
Check out the video for ‘Dreaming’ above. The video was recorded at Costello’s Tavern in Limerick. I wonder did Flan charge them £5 to shoot it?
