Fosse: New Band of the Day #277

Fosse’s debut demo Demo is out now via Big Chungus Records.

Orillia, Ontario, Canada is picturesque cottage country. Nestled over an hour away from the concrete of Toronto, Orillia lounges on the bay of Lake Simcoe with its feet up on a beach chair. It’s not the typical birthplace of black metal bands, especially one as putrid and compact as Fosse. They released their debut, curtly titled Demo, last month through their own label Big Chungus Records.

The trio lacerates with a pummeling death metal-infused take on black metal. Demo’s guitar tone is so guttural that it penetrates past the frontal lobe and into the animalistic subconscious. ‘Memories of Silence’ is a throbbing slab of cured meat that diverges from blast beats and sustained harmonies into a chunky mid-paced breakdown.

Vocalist Ben Will said of the release; “We wrote and recorded the demo last fall between lockdowns. We went for a modern black metal sound with lyrical themes such as religion, ideology, modern technology, and wild nature.”

Demo is as primal as a hyena and as violent as a bludgeon right below the eyebrow. Fosse’s tight package is a bevy of muscular riffs and black metal filth.
