Aussie indie pop duo GRRL PAL have been one of my favourite, and surprising, discoveries of 2015. Combining stripped back beats courtesy of Danny K, with the sultry, and yet innocent, vocals of Jay LeKat, their take on synth pop over the last six months has been a victory of melody over bombast. In the duo’s oeurve, latest track ‘Nerve’ plays somewhere in the middle. It’s not quite as exuberant as ‘Paradise‘ or ‘NGHT‘, but not nearly as downbeat as ‘Set Free‘ or ‘Seeing Anything‘. What it is is an exploration into a more tense and jittery atmosphere that pays dividends in its rich melodies, and delicateness. Overblown was lucky enough to interview the group earlier this year, when they confided in us about how the group formed, their plans for world domination, and their delight at their success so far.
‘Nerve’ will be featured on GRRL PAL’s upcoming EP, due for release in August, which follows their Paradise EP released last month.
