Indietracks 2017 Interview Series #10 – Cola Jet Set: “Break a Leg”

Indietracks runs from 28-30 JULY 2017 at Midland Railway, Butterley, Derbyshire, UK.

About 20 years ago I bought a 7″ single by a band called Los Fresones Rebeldes in a shop in Barcelona. I knew nothing whatsoever about the band or the record and couldn’t understand a word of what was written on the sleeve. I just loved the cover and the music matched the art, Spanish sunshine seemed to glow out of ever groove of the burgundy vinyl. To cut a long story short that band split and morphed into Cola Jet Set and now all this time later I’m going to see them at Indietracks. Serendipity indeed. Here’s Felipe and Matt from the band with the answers as our interview series hits double figures:

Overblown: It’s your first time at Indietracks. How excited are you to be playing and what have you heard about the festival?

Felipe: We played in 2009 and I think we did a good show but I was sporting a broken leg and having a hard time in my personal life. Now our show is better and so is my life, I want to enjoy fully this year’s Indietracks and make anyone happy too. Don’t tell me “break a leg” please.

O: At Overblown we love a cover version. If you had to play a cover of another artist from this year’s bill which band and song would it be? (And will you consider actually doing it?)

Matt: Anything by The Mice. Or the hit song of whoever is playing after us. Bands love it when you do that!

O: Similarly, if you were to choose a song of your own to be covered by another band on the bill which song and band would it be?

Matt: If the Wedding Present chose any of our songs for another year on the Hit Parade, that is probably as good as it gets in indie life.

O: There’s always a great indie disco to be had after the bands finish playing. What song would you request and are we likely to find you on the dancefloor?

Felipe: When we played in 2009 I had a broken leg and even so I was dancing for a while. I’m confident in any Indietracks DJ’s criterium

O: Bum Notes Karaoke with Ruby Walters is a great night and will be at Indietracks for the first time this year. What’s your go-to karaoke song and can we expect to see you singing it?

Matt: I don’t sing in public so it’s always safe to go with The Knack, ‘My Sharona’. Half the song is either a guitar solo or yelling “Whoo!”

Felipe: ‘Alright’ by Supergrass

O: With so many great bands playing tell our readers why they should choose to come and see your set.

Matt: We sound like sunny days. That’s what we’re exporting.

Felipe: We play for our lives

Cola Jet Set play Indietracks Festival on Saturday 29th July. We’ll see you all there.
