Indietracks runs from 28-30 July 2017 at Midland Railway, Butterley, Derbyshire, UK.
Everywhere. That’s where us Scots get when it comes to festivals. A few years back at my first visit to Indietracks I go straight to the bar and accidentally bump into the guy in front of me in the queue. “Sorry, ‘scuse me mate” I politely offer. “No bother pal, s’cool. Fancy a pint?”. This happens at every festival without fail. Primavera Sound is the worst offender where there’s more Glaswegians than Sauchiehall Street on a Saturday night. It’s all good though eh? Everyone loves us right?? Well, at Indietracks you’re certainly loved if you’re The Just Joans who are pretty much Indiepop royalty at the festival. Just watch out if you’re working on the crochet workshop, there’s nothing us Scots find more attractive than those crafty boys and girls. Maybe one day there’ll be an Indietracks wedding? Why? Ask David from the band:
Overblown: What are your favourite memories of Indietracks and what does it mean to you to be back playing again in 2017?
David: I think this year will be our 4th time playing at Indietracks and we’ve gone along as punters most years when we haven’t been playing. It’s as much about the people as the music (cheesy I know) and it’s always a great chance to catch up with people that you might not have seen all year. Oh, I should probably mention my long suffering girlfriend here too. We met at Indietracks. I was in a band…she was running a crochet workshop…the age old story.
O: At Overblown we love a cover version. If you had to play a cover of another artist from this year’s bill which band and song would it be? (And will you consider actually doing it?)
David: Hmmm, we tend only to do mid-90’s covers at Indietracks. Think in the past we’ve done “come out 2nite” and “do you remember the 1st time”. Can we cheat a little bit and say “Christian girls” by Hefner? The Hayman Kupa band are playing on the Saturday. Oh, or “I wanna be seen in public with you” by Milky Wimpshake!
O: Similarly, if you were to choose a song of your own to be covered by another band on the bill which song and band would it be?
David: This is by no means a plug, but probably our brand new single “no Longer young enough” (launched at Indietracks but available for pre-order from Fika recordings now). Like I said, not a plug, but it looks great. It’s available on lovely mustard yellow vinyl and features new artwork by Katie Pope (see above). I’m sure all the bands at Indietracks would make a good fist of covering it, but probably best for people just to buy our version of the track for the time being…available for pre-order at fikarecordings.com
O: There’s always a great indie disco to be had after the bands finish playing. What song would you request and are we likely to find you on the dancefloor?
David: “Don’t Falter” by Mint Royale or anything by the Magnetic Fields. I say “Anything”, but I might struggle to dance to “Experimental Music Love”. Hopefully “Heatwave” by Martha and the Vandellas might be appropriate this year too.
O: Bum Notes Karaoke with Ruby Waters is a great night and will be at Indietracks for the first time this year. What’s your go-to karaoke song and can we expect to see you singing it?
David: Our drummer, Jason, does an exceptionally good “Common People”!
With so many great bands playing tell our readers why they should choose to come and see your set.
David: Because we will be playing our new record “No Longer Young Enough”. (Available to pre-order now from Fika recordings). #notaplug
