Indietracks runs from 28-30 JULY 2017 at Midland Railway, Butterley, Derbyshire, UK.
It’s gonna feel like a huge celebration when Martha take the stage for their headline slot at Indietracks. By the time they get there the band will have been treated to a day in the lap of luxury. I’ve been backstage with Friday night headliners before and it was opulent to say the least. Each band member was sprawled across a massage table and being waited on hand and foot. The finest champagne was flowing. It made your finest 5 star hotels look like a rundown Travelodge. The highlight was when each band member was loaded on to a horse from the nearby fields to be led to the stage. It’s not just a white Gazebo with nothing in it. Honest. JC from Martha was kind enough to participate in the most uncomfortable part of the Indietracks experience, answering Overblown’s questions:
Overblown: What are your favourite memories of Indietracks and what does it mean to you to be back playing again in 2017? A Friday night headline slot must feel pretty special?
JC: My fave indietracks moment was watching Pete Dale cover Squeeze in the merch tent two or three years back. Squeeze are so important to us and Pete even more so.
Honestly though, it’s a huge honour to closing the Friday night – we feel so undeserving. I guess it’s a good excuse to get everyone together to party on a Friday night though so that’ll be fun. Let’s get weird again!
O: At Overblown we love a cover version. If you had to play a cover of another artist from this year’s bill which band and song would it be? (And will you consider actually doing it?)
JC: We’re always spouting on about what covers we’d do. Personally I’d do “Dialling Tone” by Milky Wimpshake (I dunno if it’s obvious yet – but I fuckn love them. Like, I owe Milky Wimpshake my life probably).
O: Similarly, if you were to choose a song of your own to be covered by another band on the bill which song and band would it be?
JC: Two White Cranes played a bunch of our songs at the campsite last year. I don’t think you could top that. She does them better than we do. Roxy is so perfect. She really puts us to shame.
O: There’s always a great indie disco to be had after the bands finish playing. What song would you request and are we likely to find you on the dancefloor?
JC: Do you reckon any of the DJs have “Where’s Me Jumper” by Sultans of Ping FC? Probably not right? I’ll be full of fizzy pop and doing skids on my knees regardless.
O: Bum Notes Karaoke with Ruby Walters is a great night and will be at Indietracks for the first time this year. What’s your go-to karaoke song and can we expect to see you singing it?
JC: Right now I’m channeling Susanna Hoffs herself with my pitch perfect Eternal Flame. haha. or so i reckon. That or You’re So Vain by Carly Simon. Daniel does a 10/10 version of Ludacris’ “What’s Your Fantasy?” – If Ruby Waters has it, Daniel is doing it.
O: With so many great bands playing tell our readers why they should choose to come and see your set.
JC: I’m not sure if we clash with anyone? (True – this was a daft question for Friday bands – Ed) You either sit in your tent with a lovely bag of cans or watch us with a lovely bag of cans. You gotta go see Crumbs though. Their bass player Jamie shreds the bass like a sexy freak. Peaness are great too. And obviously Milky Wimpshake because they’re the best.
Martha headline Indietracks Festival on Friday 28th July. We’ll see you all there.
