Kendrick Lamar Releases New Track, “i”

Me, Myself And I

Over 720,000 listens in four hours. Holy shitballs, Mom. Earlier today, the Compton-based rapper stealthily dropped the first release from his follow up to the critically acclaimed second album good kid, m.A.A.D. city via Soundcloud and proved that if you have something relevant to contribute you don’t have to team up with a huge corporation to force yourself on to the general public’s phones.

Produced by Rahki, it samples The Isley Brothers’ R&B hit “That Lady” originally released in 1973. The track is significantly more upbeat than most of the material on good kid, m.A.A.D. city and is imbued with a self confidence (the refrain runs: “I love myself!”) that comes after having a big selling critically acclaimed record.

There is no word yet on when the album will see the light of day although in an interview with Rolling Stone Kendrick admitted he was unsure it would see the light of day in 2014.

*Edit* The track has been taken down from Soundcloud so listen to it on YouTube instead!
