After a period of time off and personal upheaval, Damon Gough wants to remind us that he is still about.
A lot has happened since Badly Drawn Boy released his last album in 2012. There’s been a divorce, a new partner, and a new baby. There’s also been a significant period away from music before writing the bunch of songs that will comprise his next album, due out next year.
Tonight he seems endearingly nervous, playing tracks from across his career and treating those assembled to anecdotes about peeing with Hugh Grant, his time writing the soundtrack to About A Boy, and the laughing and joy of working with the late Caroline Aherne on her film The Fattest Man in Britain.
Epitomising the low key and lo-fi singer songwriter movement of the late 90s/early 00s, it is wonderful to have Gough back with new music on the way. Let’s hope it’s the first new album of many.
