Mazes – Salford – Play It Again, Sam

Mazes - Salford

Mazes are from Manchester and obviously proud of it judging by the name of their latest track “Salford”. Ironically, the track itself doesn’t sound like it was created anywhere near Britain, let alone Lancashire. That’s no bad thing though. Coming off like some kind of combination of Sonic Youth and The Pixies, the track is an angular 90s indebted stream of consciousness ode to  Manchester’s second city.

“Salford” is the second song they’ve released from their upcoming third album Wooden Aquarium after “Astigmatism”. The record will be released on September 8th via FatCat and was recorded in sub zero temperatures in Cornwall, New York and Brooklyn with Parquet Courts producer Jonathan Schenke.

The band thoroughly enjoyed the experience and found recording the album out of the way rewarding. “The studio was completely isolated; an idyllic place to make a record. Green, remote, backwatery, fewer distractions… but things made a turn for the worst the night we arrived,” remembers singer and guitarist Jack Cooper. “Our van was broken into and gear stolen within an hour of being in New York. Then around three feet of snow fell over night. We had to shovel our way to the studio every morning. It was interesting being snowed in – you get busy and knuckle down.”
