Nai Harvest – Buttercups – Play It Again, Sam

Nai Harvest- Buttercups

Kind Of Like Smashing Pumpkins Fronted By Some Slacker

It’s difficult to believe that the huge, Smashing Pumpkins-esque sound created by Nai Harvest on “Buttercups”, the first release from their split EP with Playlounge titled Flower, is the product of just Ben Thompson on guitar and vocal duties, with Lew Currie on drums. In 1993, Billy Corgan had to multi-track roughly a million guitars (this may be exaggeration) to achieve a sound as enormous as this. Unlike William, the Sheffield duo don’t utilise this Goliath sound to explore melancholy and infinite sadness. After the pounding of the intro, the song calms into a more summery and upbeat verse akin to Ride or early Superchunk. It’s like a psychedelic influenced pop shoegaze adventure before once again exploding intoa celebratory chorus.

Earlier this year, the pair released both their debut release, an EP titled Hold Open My Head, and their debut LP Whatever to critical acclaim from the likes of NME, Brooklyn Vegan and Pitchfork. Following an explosive UK tour with Gnarwolves in December 2013, the duo followed this with support slots for Real Friends, You Blew It! and Modern Baseball’s UK tour in May 2014 and after key festival appearances, including Tramlines and Beacons, they will be on the road again with Superheaven in September 2014.
