New Band of the Day #135: Afformance

New albums Pop Nihilism and Music For Imaginary Film #1 out now.

Who: CV, Costas, Dennis, John, Nikos.

What: Post-rock (As So I Watch You From Afar, God Is An Astronaut).

Where: Athens, Greece.

Why: You know, post-rock can sometimes get a bit tedious in its meanderings. You can have no such concerns with Greek quintet Afformance. Fluent and ambitious, their creations are tightly knit compositions full of imagination and beauty. Sweeping and lush, and sometimes jagged, their songs develop and flow with an ease that is surely very tough to pull off.

‘Perspectivism’, streaming above, is taken from one of two albums that they released on the same day recently like a post-rock version of Guns ‘N’ Roses. This one starts a bit deceptively with a thudding pound that sounds kind of like the Terminator theme music. However, it quickly expands and delves into an uplifting and swirling gem.

‘Sol In The Woods’ is taken from the other album they released recently. Seemingly more restrained than ‘Perspectivism’ the track showcases their love of cinematic synth work. Post-apocalyptic. Which is just what we like.
