New single ‘Clubbing Baby Seals’ out now.
Who: Luke Daly – Vocals, Andy Killian – Guitar, Cian Mullane – Bass, Dylan Walsh – Drums.
Where: Cork, Ireland.
Why: For me what makes Cork metalcore/hardcore outfit Selkies stand out from the crowd is their unwavering attention to dynamics. Their music doesn’t simply pummel, it pushes and pulls you all over the place from ferocity to dissonance to proggy noodling. It is not just a cathartic and intense listen but also a fascinating and intriguing listen. That all this happens over relatively short song times only makes them ever more endearing.
They’ve a concise blast entitled ’22° Halo’. It’s class. Listen to it below. Did you know that ’22° Halo’ refers to a ‘ring of light 22 degrees from the sun or moon’? I certainly didn’t. Apparently, ‘Halos form when light from the sun or moon is refracted by ice crystals associated with thin, high-level clouds (like cirrostratus clouds). A 22-degree halo is a ring of light 22 degrees from the sun (or moon) and is the most common type of halo observed and is formed by hexagonal ice crystals with diameters less than 20.5 micrometres.’
