New album, Capacity, is out June 9th via Saddle Creek.
Last June, New York quartet Big Thief released their stunning debut album, Masterpiece. A collection of luxurious and deeply personal alt/folk rock songs, the album left an indelible impression with its ability to reconcile huge hooks and intimate subject matter.
Now the group are back with ‘Mythological Beauty’, the first track to be gleaned from their upcoming second album. Again, the band’s laid back, light musical manner is belied by the honesty and darkness of the lyrics therein. Witness a choice line from ‘Mythological Beauty’: “Seventeen, you took his come / And you gave birth to your first life / You gave Andrew a family who you thought would love and take better care / I have an older brother I don’t know / He could be anywhere”. To be honest, the frankness is endearing and stunning. The single will be made available on Record Store Day, April 22, as a 7” vinyl, along with non-album track ‘Breathe in My Lungs.’
“There is a darker darkness and a lighter light on this album,” reveals Adrianne Lenker (vocals/guitar). “The songs search for a deeper level of self-acceptance, to embrace the world within and without. I think Masterpiece began that process, as a first reaction from inside the pain, and Capacity continues that examination with a wider perspective.”
