New album Stranger Fruit is set for release June 8th 2018.

Zeal & Ardor, the experimental metal project from Manuel Gagneux that melds black spirituals with black metal, are set to release their sophomore album Stranger Fruit on June 8th. Perhaps named in a nod to the classic anti-racism jazz song ‘Strange Fruit’ popularised by Billie Holiday, the album promises to see the band expand on the blueprint they laid with their brutally original debut album Devil Is Fine.

The first single from the album is titled ‘Gravedigger’s Chant’ and is streaming below. The track sees the band rein in their black metal tendencies to focus on the more spiritual side of their music. However, there is an underlying threatening heft beneath the song that suggests a flurry of double bass and thunderous guitars is never far away.

“The gravedigger’s chant is the song sung by the people who lay your body to rest,” Gagneux explains. “These people don’t care where you were, but they know what you did and who loved you. All they know is what lies before them. So they sing this song since you can no longer breathe a note.”

He continues, “Our intent is both to familiarize as well as alienate. The video of ‘Gravedigger’s Chant’ subverts roles: People find themselves in situations untypical for their ilk, tools become weapons, weapons turn into tools, and fingers meant for sensing make themselves felt.”

Stranger Fruit will be sixteen tracks long and was mixed by Converge’s Kurt Ballou.
