Earlier this year, nothing slapped me in the face with the release of their debut album Guilty of Everything via pioneering metal label Relapse Records (Mastodon, Baroness, Dillinger Escape Plan). Basically, they took the existing shoegaze template championed by My Bloody Valentine etc. and made it more insistent, more intense adding pummeling drums and just as huge but sharper Deftones-esque guitars. When you are pushing 30 you get a little jaded and I was not expecting to love a record as much as I love Guilty of Everything.
When the band are not creating videos using home invasion footage, they are still at this mega song crafting lark. “July The Fourth” is a relentless, enormous, and yet delicate and pretty even metal/shoegaze outing from their forthcoming split with fellow post-metal/shoegazers Whirr (Nick Bassett is a member of both groups).
