The Italian shoegaze and dreampop community been emerged as one that is highly unique on the wider European scene, while still remaining relatively underground. A number of great artists have surfaced as part of this movement, including Stella Diana, Be Forest, Rev Rev Rev, Brothers in Law, The Yellow Traffic Light, Clustersun, Weird, In Her Eye and also Novanta.
Novanta (a.k.a. Manfredi Lamartina) will soon release his new album Hello We’re Not Enemies. Today, we premiere the first single from this album, called ‘Goðafoss’, inspired by the powerful waterfall in Iceland, a country that Lamartina is in love with, having spent some time there last year.
“The story of this place is interesting: after Iceland’s adoption of Christianity (around the year 1000), all the statues of the Norse gods were thrown into this waterfall. It’s a metaphor for human nature, I think. The Cathedral in Akureyri has a window that illustrates this story,” explains Lamartina.
“Goðafoss is about a man who wants to be a god, shaking the world and erasing all the evil. But mankind is indifferent to everything: love, compassion, empathy.”
In this release, Novanta continues his path of charting new fantastic music blossoming in the cozy fields of shoegaze, pop, post-rock and electronica.
There have been few projects where shoegaze and electronica combine so well together. Goðafoss is beautiful, full of vigour and musters optimism, like The Wonder Stuff mixed with Noir Désir and Tiromancino.
The songs featured on ‘Hello We’re Not Enemies’ involve collaboration with some very talented artists, including Australian Ian Bonnar (In Every Dream A Nightmare Waits), Claudio Cataldi, Fabrizio De Felice (Bialogard), Giuseppe Musto (Il ragazzo del Novantanove), Raniero Federico Neri (Albedo), and Giampiero Riggio (Haas).
It’s been two years since Novanta released their Best-Selling Dreams LP and the free download single ‘A Fever’, along with an Ummagma remix combining multiple tracks from that very album.
‘Hello We’re Not Enemies’ is due for release on June 17 and will be available in digital download and limited edition cassette via Seashell Records‘ Bandcamp site. The full album will be exclusively streamed via OndaRock on June 13.
