JAWS – Be Slowly: First track from debut album
Growing up, my dad would regularly admonish me for being so laid back that I was horizontal. Jaws wrote the soundtrack to that teenage boy’s epic laziness. Hailing from Digbeth in Birmingham, Connor, Alex, Eddy, and Jake have been creating music as Jaws since 2012. One of many extremely promising products of the B-Town scene, their peers Peace and Swim Deep have already released their debut albums with Peace’s In Love impressively peaking at number 16 in the English album charts. Jaws are surely the next success story from this fertile scene.
These boys never muster a pace greater than mid tempo but this is never particularly detrimental to their shtick; they’re content to let the vitriolic angst to the kids who sit at the back of class and smoke behind the bike sheds. The music is warm and hazy, somewhat like a smiley, happy version of Madchester. Imagine The Stone Roses by way of a hippy commune or My Bloody Valentine if they wrote infectious pop tunes. Their latest single “Be Slowly” ups the ante. It’s the title track from their forthcoming album and it’s bouncy, spacey and summery vibe is as refreshing as a glass of lemonade in the July sun. Plus there’s handclaps. Comparisons to The Cure are inevitable, but Robert Smith et al never sounded this cheery. If this indicates the quality of their debut album, we’re all in for a treat.
JAWS’ debut album Be Slowly will be released on 15th September via Rattle Pop and they will tour the UK that month.
