We are all accustomed with the idea that songs and movies have to promote beauty, goodwill and romance. Indeed, they have to. But it also doesn’t mean that picking another subject than love for a song, you will not promote something valuable. How about values and responsibilities? Or someone sing about life as it is, with all its problems and daily duties that are all spinning around money…
And there were and still are a lot of dare-devils in the music world (most of them very famous even), who broke the ice and brought something new to the people. Today I want to talk not only from the musical perspective, but also from the lyrics one, because you can sing about money in various ways and, as a rule, lyrics make the difference.
Here is my top of best songs about money you should listen to. Let’s go:
#1 ABBA – Money, money, money
Let’s start with the classics of the modern pop-music. Even the famous ABBA couldn’t neglect the money topic in their songs. Why not? Here is the reality they are singing about: “I work all night, I work all day, to pay the bills I have to pay. Ain’t it sad?”. Of course, it is sad. But who cares? Everyone needs money. And here comes a possible way of escape for the song main character: “In my dreams I have a plan, If I got me a wealthy man. I wouldn’t have to work at all, I’d fool around and have a ball…” or another one, a more realistic one: “So I must leave, I’ll have to go, To Las Vegas or Monaco, And win a fortune in a game like here, my life will never be the same…”. Have you caught the main idea of the song? It’s easier to try your luck and win money than sell your love. Here is the value we were talking about at the beginning.
#2 AC/DC – Moneytalks
Another music legend and another song about money. Well, it doesn’t surprise, as rock artists usually are the one who treat uncomfortable topics in their songs, in order to catch the public’s attention and stress on what is really important in life. “Tailored suits, chauffeured cars, Fine hotels and big cigars, Up for grabs, all for a price”. It starts with a description of what means a lot of money – having everything. This song says about the price you have to pay for living an expensive life: “So what do you do that’s guaranteed. Hey little girl, You want it all”. But is it really worth it? Everyone has his/her own answer to this question.
#3 The Flying Lizards – Money
This UK artists launched a very courageous challenge to the society, with this song. One is telling, in a soft manner that you need money for living, and another one is writing a sincere and even cynic text – reflection of many people’s thoughts: “Your love gives me such a thrill, But your love won’t pay my bills, I want money”; “Money don’t get everything it’s true, But what it don’t get I can’t use. I want money”. The comments to these lyrics are useless. I am sure this song made everyone stop for a minute and think, what they are really appreciating in this life. And if you haven’t heard this song yet, it’s a must.
#4 Bruno Mars – Billionaire
Coming to recent songs, I have to mention that here we can also find something interesting to listen to. Here is another way of talking about money – in satire. A young man dreams about becoming a billionaire and all the things he would do, having lots of money. “I wanna be a billionaire so freakin’ bad, Buy all of the things I never had. I wanna be on the cover of Forbes magazine, Smiling next to Oprah and the Queen”. Sadly, it’s a reality of some people dreaming about such unimportant things like being on the cover of a magazine.
What does unify all these different types of songs? The desire to have money: working for them, dreaming about them or recognizing that the striving for money destroys everything human in a person’s soul. Stop thinking about money. Let’s appreciate the people around us, instead. I am really happy that there are pieces of art like these songs, stressing our attention on something much more important than money.
