SpaceFest! 2016 – Pure Phase Ensemble 6 feat. Anton Newcombe and Emil Nikolaisen | Overblown Trailer Premiere

SpaceFest! 2016 runs from 2-3 December in Gdansk, Poland.

Space rock, shoegaze, alternative music festival SpaceFest! is back and gearing up for its sixth iteration. Organised by Nasiono Records and taking place in Gdansk, Poland, the fest promises to explore the outer reaches of the musical mind as is its wont.

The event is preced by a week long workshop for Pure Phase Ensemble, an ever changing group of artists that is created each year just for the festival. This year, the group will be fronted by the enigmatic Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Emil Nikolaisen (producer, multi-instrumentalist and frontman of Serena Maneesh). Other PPE members are from the following Polish alternative bands: Polpo Motel (Olga Myslowska), Jesien (Maciej Karminski), Oslo Kill City (Jakub Zwirello), Judy’s Funeral (Marcin Lewandowski) and Aiodine (Kacper Graczyk). The collective will also involve Nasiono Records’ very own Karol Schwarz (7faz, KSAS).

Previously the group has involved Mark Gardener (Ride), Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Ray Dickaty (ex Spiritualized), Steve Hewitt (ex Placebo), Jaime Harding (Marion), Chris Olley (Six By Seven), and Hugo Race (The Bad Seeds, The True Spirit).

“When I was initially asked to do this, they had a different game plan with some guy doing beats and this that and the other, and wanted me to be this Kevin Shields guitar type guy…and I said that’s fucking stupid,” says Anton Newcombe. “I play all types of things, so I said you should let me bring my friend Emil, who I really respect and a bunch of gear, analog synths, the melotron, guitar amps and delays, and we will drive there from Berlin and twist your melons.

I write music everyday. I’m not too precious about it… but I feel strongly that ideas have power over non ideas… so I don’t want to waste the opportunity to do something wonderful with everyone… I have great faith in Emil – that’s why I asked him to join me…

and I am really interested in making connections with Polish artists, mostly singers because I would like to write with someone at my studio and make records. I believe in culture…”
