I know shit all about rap and hip hop. However, I knew what I likes. And I like “Guts”. It’s the ninth single release by London label Speedy Wunderground, and features 20 year old Loyle Carner (discovered by Pierre Hall from the label while he trawled the internet) and the Mercury Prize nominated Kate Tempest (rapper and performance poet extraordinaire). It’s set for release on Monday 8th December as a limited edition 7″ and features “Guts (Mr Dan’s Balloon Dub) as the b-side.
Hall discovered the young Carner after stumbling across his video for his song “Cantona” based on the passing away of his Dad. “I fell in love with it immediately” explained Pierre, “something about the sincerity of the lyrics, it felt authentic, but raw and exposed too. I could relate to it. I knew nothing about him but sent it to Dan and Alexis straight away simply saying we had to work with him”.
Loyle was invited to the label’s launch night of their compilation Speedy Wunderground – Year 1, where he met Tempest who was there to perform. “When Dan suggested working together with Kate on something – it was like a dream come true,’ says Loyle, ‘that day in the studio with them both is something I’ll never forget”.
The result was the confrontational and gritty “Guts”, which sees Carner and Tempest trade verses, which Carner describes as, “A call to arms. A statement.”
