First Album Since 2004’s Self-Titled Album
Albion’s Libertines have announced their first album since their 2004 self-titled classic, which included ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’ and ‘What Became Of The Likely Lads’. The album will be called Anthems For Doomed Youth, and it is out September 4th via Harvest. Here at Overblown we’re quite relieved to hear this news as we hope it means that Palma Violets may slink away into the night. Watch a live performance of album track, ‘Gunga Din’, above.
It seems a safe bet that the album is named after the Wilfried Owen poem ‘Anthem For Doomed Youth’, a famed anti World War I Petrarchan sonnet written in 1917. Read the poem below. It is not the only allusion to English poetry on the album as the track ‘Gunga Din’ is named after a Rudyard Kipling poem of the same name which depicts the death of an Indian water-bearer, who had saved an English soldier’s life and was first published in 1892.
Anthem for Doomed Youth
BY WILFRED OWEN
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,—
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.
The pallor of girls’ brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.
The deluxe edition features four extra tracks recorded live at Karma Sound Studios this last May 20th. You can also grab a box set version of the album which includes: deluxe CD, 12″ vinyl, exclusive film, demo CD, a signed art print, and artwork for all album tracks.
