GB30 is out on 22nd September via HHBTM / Scopitones.
It’s an unusual tale of an album anniversary. In 2008, David Gedge’s indie pop pioneers The Wedding Present were fresh from a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album’s release. They retreated to the studio to record their new studio album El Rey with Steve Albini. While there, Gedge got the brainwave to re-record George Best as he had always intended. Live. Albini was not enamoured with the idea. But one thinks that he is rarely too enamoured with anything really.
Regardless, Gedge got Albini to come around and they recorded George Best, for a second time, in super quick time. The result is a record that has all the wonderful qualities of the original but with something extra. There’s more punch in the drums, more life in the guitars, and more soul in Gedge’s voice. This is hardly a surprise given Albini’s unique ability to imbue recordings with a width and breadth that is often astounding.
Don’t take our word for it. Listen to ‘Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft’, taken from GB30, for yourself below. You won’t be disappointed.
