West London’s The Vaccines have revealed the video for the debut single titled ‘Handsome’ from their “Sleater-Kinney” inspired third LP (titled English Grafitti, the LP will be out this spring via Capitol Records). The kung-fu influenced video, directed by CANADA, sees the band members taking the roles of martial art trained vigilantes. The single, which was recorded in the winter of 2014 at Dave Fridmann’s Tarbox Road Studio in upstate New York, was produced by the band themselves, Fridmann (Tame Impala, Flaming Lips, MGMT) and Cole MGN (Ariel Pink, Beck, Nite Jewel). It is a bouncy, hook laden, indie pop rock flash, which is what The Vaccines do best.
“We wanted to create a video that was a sort of bubblegum ode to cinema and, in particular, Hong Kong kung fu movies,” explains Justin Young of the band. “Music to me is entertainment, and escapism, and we wanted the video to be an extension of that. We want to create another world in which we can play aspirational and heightened versions of ourselves. We shot this through a winter’s night in a warehouse in Brooklyn, just before Christmas. No fun indeed. Gerson though, as Canada directors always seem to do, helped us escape and create exactly the world in which we wish we lived.”
The band have also announced a short UK tour in March and April playing exclusive, intimate shows visiting some regional towns and cities for the first time in their career. The band will shortly announce full details of their forthcoming LP, and an arena tour of the UK.
