A Friday night in April will probably always have some sort of buzz in the air.

The promise of the first beer garden drinks of the year, the skies remaining lighter for longer than they have in months, the thrill of a full weekend of whatever you please ahead. The knowledge that Porij are ready to bring their irresistible dance fever to Leeds only makes that buzz all the more palpable.

Formed on the desire to play dance music live, Porij’s musical career so far has been built on creating exhilarating, cathartic live shows where their audiences are free to be whoever they are. Just a week before the release of their debut album, Teething, the band deliver on that legacy as they launch into a show as liberating as it is captivating.

Delving into their back catalogue, Porij cherry-pick some of their oldest hits; relishing in the sheer joy that exudes from tracks like ‘150’. Their kaleidoscopic guitar lines and invigorating beats invite release from their crowd, all of whom scarcely stop moving along with them throughout the set. ‘Nobody Scared’, a track dedicated to sexual harassment and being made to feel uncomfortable daily, is a stirringly sacred moment of empowerment – a real theme of the evening.

Emotions are high, and Porij’s poignant take on dance provides the perfect opportunity to unleash those feelings in whatever form – new tracks like ‘Marmite’ see Porij more vibrant than ever, whilst ‘Lose Our Minds’ is a particular standout.

A cover of Calvin Harris’s ‘Acceptable in the 80s’ is a masterful example of Porij’s ability to hold a crowd on an absolute high, and it’s one they ride until the set’s conclusion.

With vocals so crystalline its hard to believe they’re live, and a passion emanating off the band from the get-go, Porij justify their place among the country’s must-see live acts. By their final song, ‘You Should Know Me’, they’ve managed to capture that carefree Friday night atmosphere and inject it into every track, leaving the crowd to go on with the rest of their evening feeling lighter than they did when they first walked in.
